Fining Pot

The fining pot (Hebrew matsreph) is the crucible used by metalworkers to melt and purify silver and gold, burning off dross and impurities at high heat. It appears in two proverbs: "The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace is for gold, but the LORD tests hearts" (Proverbs 17:3); and "The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace is for gold, and a man is tested by his praise" (Proverbs 27:21).

Both proverbs draw an analogy between the metallurgist's testing process and the way human character is revealed under pressure or scrutiny. Just as the crucible reveals the purity or impurity of metal, trials, adversity, and the response to flattery reveal the true character of a person. The theological point — that the LORD tests hearts as the refiner tests metal — recurs throughout the wisdom literature and prophets (Psalm 66:10; Zechariah 13:9; Isaiah 48:10), establishing divine testing as a purposeful and ultimately purifying process.
