Fisher

Fishers were professional catchers of fish, prominent especially around the Sea of Galilee and along the Mediterranean coast. Several of Jesus's apostles were fishermen by trade before he called them: Peter and Andrew were casting a net into the sea (Mark 1:16-17), and James and John were mending their nets in their boat with their father Zebedee when Jesus called them to follow him. Fishing in the Sea of Galilee was a substantial economic industry in the first century.

Jesus transformed the fisherman's identity into a theological vocation: "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men" (Matthew 4:19; Mark 1:17). This metaphor draws on the prophetic use of fishing imagery for gathering scattered people (Jeremiah 16:16; Ezekiel 47:10). The miraculous catch of 153 fish in John 21:1-14 — the post-resurrection appearance where the risen Christ directs the disciples to the catch — functions both as a sign and as a restoration of the fishing commission, now understood in its full missionary dimension.
