Gaal

Gaal (meaning: contempt; abomination), son of Ebed, was a Canaanite adventurer who came to Shechem and stirred its citizens to rebel against Abimelech, the son of Gideon who had made himself ruler over that city (Judges 9:26). His arrival at Shechem during the vintage festival gave him an opportunity to win the confidence of the Shechemites, and he publicly challenged Abimelech's authority, boasting that he would drive him out if he had command of the people.

Zebul, the ruler of Shechem loyal to Abimelech, secretly warned Abimelech of Gaal's agitation. Abimelech came by night and positioned his men in ambush. When Gaal went out in the morning, Abimelech's forces routed him and his followers. Zebul then drove Gaal and his kinsmen out of Shechem entirely. Gaal disappears from the narrative at this point, his brief insurrection having failed to unseat Abimelech, though the rebellion of Shechem continued and was ultimately crushed.
