Gaddi

Gaddi (meaning: my troop; a kid), son of Susi, was the spy sent from the tribe of Manasseh among the twelve men appointed by Moses to scout the land of Canaan (Numbers 13:11). He was one of the ten spies who brought back a discouraging report, arguing that the inhabitants of Canaan were too powerful to overcome. His name and tribe are recorded in the roster of the twelve spies but he is not otherwise mentioned in Scripture.

Gaddi's inclusion in the reconnaissance mission reflects the principle that each of Israel's twelve tribes sent a representative leader to assess the promised land. His negative report contributed to the national crisis of faith at Kadesh-barnea that resulted in Israel's forty years of wilderness wandering — the entire generation of men who doubted God's ability to deliver the land being condemned to die before the conquest. Only Caleb and Joshua, who gave a minority report of faith, survived to enter Canaan.
