Gaddiel

Gaddiel (meaning: goat of God; the Lord my happiness), son of Sodi, was the representative of the tribe of Zebulun among the twelve spies Moses sent to reconnoiter the land of Canaan (Numbers 13:10). Like Gaddi of Manasseh, he was among the majority who returned with a frightening report of the land's fortified cities and giant inhabitants, counseling that Israel could not take the land. His name and father's name are preserved in the spy roster but he receives no further mention in the biblical narrative.

The twelve spies' mission was intended to gather tactical intelligence for the coming conquest, not to vote on whether to attempt it — God had already promised the land. Gaddiel's failure of nerve, shared by ten of the twelve, transformed a military reconnaissance into a crisis of theological trust. The episode stands in biblical history as the defining moment of the wilderness generation's unbelief, and the names of all twelve spies are preserved as a record of both the faithful and the faithless.
