Gamul

Gamul (meaning: a recompense) was the head of the twenty-second division of priests organized by David for the rotation of temple service. In the lot-casting that assigned each priestly division its order of ministry, Gamul's course fell to the twenty-second position (1 Chronicles 24:17). David organized the priests into twenty-four divisions, each serving one week at a time in rotation throughout the year, a system that remained in place through the Second Temple period.

The priestly division of Gamul is mentioned in the New Testament context only indirectly: Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist, belonged to the division of Abijah (the eighth division) and was serving his course when Gabriel appeared to him in the temple. The careful preservation of these priestly division names in 1 Chronicles reflects the importance the returning exiles placed on reconstituting legitimate temple ministry according to Davidic precedent. Gamul himself is known only from this administrative roster, his name preserved as a token of the organized worship structure David established.
