Geder

Geder was a Canaanite royal city whose king was defeated by Joshua in the conquest of Canaan (Joshua 12:13). It appears in the list of thirty-one conquered Canaanite kings in Joshua 12, which catalogs the victories of the Israelite campaign before the allocation of the land to the tribes. The city's location has not been definitively identified, though some scholars have proposed identification with Gederah or Gedor in the Shephelah or Judean hills region.

Geder appears only once in Scripture, in this conquest summary list, making it one of many Canaanite cities whose existence is attested only through the record of their defeat. The list in Joshua 12 serves a theological as well as historical purpose: it demonstrates the scope of God's faithfulness in giving the land into Israel's hands as promised to the patriarchs, and the comprehensiveness of Israel's military victories under Joshua's leadership before the apportionment of the land to the individual tribes.
