Gin

Concept

A gin in biblical usage is a trap or snare set to catch birds or animals, representing the Hebrew pach, a spring-trap or noose. The word appears in Isaiah 8:14 ("a gin" for the people) and Amos 3:5 ("Can a bird fall in a snare upon the earth, where no gin is for him?"), where it is used metaphorically for entrapments — whether divine judgment or the schemes of enemies. The image of the gin or snare is common in the wisdom literature and psalms to describe the dangers that beset the righteous (Ps. 141:9).
