Girgashite
Person Name
Name meaning: "who arrives from pilgrimage"
The Girgashites were one of the seven Canaanite nations inhabiting the land before the Israelite conquest, listed among the peoples God commanded Israel to dispossess (Deut. 7:1; Josh. 3:10). They appear in the Table of Nations as descendants of Canaan (Gen. 10:16). Their precise location in Canaan is unknown, as no Girgashite city has been positively identified. Ancient Ugaritic texts may contain a reference to a family or clan bearing a similar name. The Girgashites are included in covenantal and historical catalogs (Neh. 9:8) but play no further individual role in biblical narrative.
