Gittith

Gittith appears in the superscription of three psalms (Pss. 8, 81, 84) as a musical term: "To the chief musician upon Gittith." The exact meaning is uncertain. Some scholars derive it from Gath (the Philistine city) and understand it as a Gittite musical instrument or melody imported from there. Others connect it to the Hebrew word for wine-press (gat) and suggest it designated a vintage-harvest tune. The Septuagint renders it as "for the wine-presses," supporting the harvest-song interpretation. The precise instrument or tune is no longer recoverable.
