Glede
Concept
The glede is listed among the unclean birds in the Mosaic dietary law (Deut. 14:13). The Hebrew term ra'ah denotes a bird of prey, most likely identified as the red kite (Milvus milvus), a falcon-family bird known for its keen eyesight — the root of the Hebrew word means "to see." The kite is common throughout the Levant. Along with eagles, vultures, and other raptors, it was forbidden as food for Israel. The parallel list in Leviticus 11 uses a slightly different Hebrew term, making precise ornithological identification uncertain.
