Glutton

A glutton in biblical usage is one who is addicted to excessive eating and drinking, often linked with a lazy, dissolute lifestyle. The Mosaic law prescribed that a persistently rebellious son who was "a glutton and a drunkard" could be brought before the elders and stoned (Deut. 21:20–21), reflecting how seriously the community took this breakdown of self-control and filial respect. Jesus was falsely accused by his critics of being "a gluttonous man and a winebibber" (Matt. 11:19; Luke 7:34) because he ate freely with sinners and tax collectors. Paul quotes a Cretan saying that Cretans are always "gluttons" (Titus 1:12) in warning against false teachers. The concept belongs to the broader biblical treatment of self-mastery and the ordering of bodily appetites.
