Godliness

Godliness (eusebeia in Greek) refers to the whole of practical piety — reverence toward God expressed in faithful conduct and worship. Paul describes it as profitable both for this life and for eternity (1 Tim. 4:8) and lists it among the qualities Timothy is to pursue (1 Tim. 6:11; 2 Pet. 1:6–7). The "mystery of godliness" (1 Tim. 3:16) refers to the content of the Christian faith — the incarnation, resurrection, ascension, and proclamation of Christ — which is the foundation of true piety. Peter connects godliness to knowledge and self-control as a progression in Christian character (2 Pet. 1:3–7). The New Testament warns against a "form of godliness" that denies its power — external religious performance without inner transformation (2 Tim. 3:5).
