Golan

Golan (meaning passage; revolution) was a city in the region of Bashan east of the Jordan, assigned to the half-tribe of Manasseh and designated as one of the six cities of refuge for the accidental manslayer (Deut. 4:43; Josh. 20:8). It was also set apart as a Levitical city given to the Gershonite Levites (Josh. 21:27). Golan gave its name to the surrounding district — the Golan Heights, still known by that name today — a strategically elevated plateau east of the Sea of Galilee.
