Gomer

Gomer is the name of two biblical figures. (1.) The daughter of Diblaim, who became the wife of the prophet Hosea at God's command, as a living parable of Israel's spiritual adultery — her unfaithfulness to Hosea mirrored Israel's idolatry and covenant-breaking (Hos. 1:3; 3:1–3). Whether the marriage was literal or visionary is debated, but the theological point is clear: God's relationship with Israel is like a faithful husband's love for an unfaithful wife. (2.) The eldest son of Japheth, grandson of Noah, and ancestor of the northern peoples known as the Cimmerians (Gen. 10:2–3; 1 Chr. 1:5–6). Gomer's descendants — Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah — are associated with peoples of Asia Minor and the Black Sea region. Ezekiel lists Gomer among the nations that join Gog's coalition (Ezek. 38:6).
