Hadad-rimmon

Hadad-rimmon was a place in the valley of Megiddo associated with a notable lamentation remembered in Zechariah 12:11: In that day shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem, as the mourning of Hadad-rimmon in the valley of Megiddon. The name compounds the names of two Syrian deities—Hadad, the storm god, and Rimmon, the thunder deity—suggesting the site held cultic significance connected to Aramaean religious practice that had penetrated into Israelite territory.

Most commentators identify the mourning of Hadad-rimmon with the national lamentation that arose at Megiddo following the death of King Josiah in battle against Pharaoh Necho (2 Chr. 35:22–25), though some view it as a reference to a seasonal mourning ritual for the dying-and-rising deity. Zechariah uses the image to describe the intense grief that will accompany Israel's future recognition of the one they have pierced—a passage cited in John 19:37.
