Hadar
Name meaning: "power; greatness"
Hadar (meaning power or greatness) is the name of two Old Testament figures. The first was a son of Ishmael, Abraham's son by Hagar, listed among the twelve princes of Ishmael's line (Gen. 25:15; 1 Chr. 1:30). The second was an Edomite king, the son of Bedad, who reigned in Pau and whose wife was Mehetabel (Gen. 36:39; 1 Chr. 1:50–51). He appears in the pre-monarchic king list of Edom, a series of rulers who preceded the establishment of the Israelite monarchy.
The name also appears in a variant form as Hadad in some manuscript traditions of the Edomite king list (compare Gen. 36:39 with 1 Chr. 1:50), reflecting a common scribal interchange between the Hebrew letters resh and daleth. Both figures are obscure beyond their genealogical entries, but they illustrate the antiquity and reach of the Ishmaelite and Edomite tribal networks surrounding ancient Israel.
