Hagarene

Hagarene (also Hagarite) designates members of a tribal people descended from or associated with Hagar, dwelling east and southeast of Gilead in the Transjordanian region. The Hagarites appear in three biblical contexts. First, they are listed among the enemies of Israel in a prayer-psalm of Asaph (Ps. 83:6), grouped with Gebal, Ammon, Amalek, and other foes who conspired against Israel. Second, the Transjordanian tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half-Manasseh warred against the Hagarites and defeated them during the reign of Saul, taking their flocks and settling in their territory (1 Chr. 5:10–22).

Additionally, two individuals are designated Hagarene: Jaziz the Hagarite, who oversaw David's royal flocks (1 Chr. 27:31), and one of David's mighty men whose father was a Hagarite (1 Chr. 11:38). These individual examples show that Hagarites could serve in the Israelite royal administration, indicating a degree of integration alongside the tribal enmity reflected in the military accounts.
