Hammath

Hammath (meaning warm springs) was one of the fortified cities in the tribal territory of Naphtali, listed in Joshua 19:35 among the fenced cities assigned to that tribe after the conquest. It is generally identified with the site of hot springs on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee, just south of Tiberias—the same springs known in the New Testament period as Emmaus or Hammath, and today as Hamat Tverya, where hot sulfur springs have been famous since antiquity.

The city may be identical with or closely related to Hammon (1 Chr. 6:76) and Hammoth-dor (Josh. 21:32), which were Levitical cities also in Naphtali associated with warm springs. If so, it represents the same geographical location appearing under slightly variant names across different source documents. The site's hot springs made it a natural gathering point throughout the ancient and classical periods and are still a tourist attraction today.
