Hammon

Hammon (meaning warm springs or the sun) is the name of two places in the Old Testament. The first was a town in the tribal territory of Asher (Josh. 19:28), situated near the Phoenician coast in the region that would later include Tyre and Sidon. Its exact identification is uncertain, though some scholars propose a site near modern Umm el-Awamid south of Tyre.

The second Hammon was a Levitical city in the territory of Naphtali (1 Chr. 6:76), likely the same site as Hammath (Josh. 19:35) and Hammoth-dor (Josh. 21:32), all of which are associated with warm springs near the Sea of Galilee. The slight variations in the name across different passages likely reflect scribal variants of the same geographical designation referring to the well-known hot springs on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee south of Tiberias.
