Hanniel

Hanniel (meaning grace or mercy of God) is the name of two Old Testament figures. The first was a chief of the tribe of Manasseh, the son of Ephod, appointed by Moses as one of the representatives responsible for dividing the land of Canaan among the tribes (Num. 34:23)—one of a group of ten tribal leaders, one per tribe, designated to supervise the distribution of the promised land after the conquest.

The second Hanniel was a son of Ulla in the tribe of Asher, listed in the genealogy of 1 Chronicles 7:39 among the sons of Asher who were capable warriors and heads of their clans. Both figures appear only in their respective genealogical or administrative contexts and have no further narrative involvement in the biblical text. The name belongs to the family of theophoric names built on the divine name El (God) combined with the root of grace (hnn), reflecting the Israelite practice of naming children to express theological truths about God's character.
