Haruphite

Concept

Haruphite is a geographical or clan designation applied to Shephatiah, one of the Benjaminite warriors who came to David at Ziklag during his time of refuge from Saul (1 Chronicles 12:5). The epithet indicates that Shephatiah was from the village of Hariph — possibly the same location as "Hariph" in the post-exilic census lists (Nehemiah 7:24), or from a village in Benjamin whose name is not otherwise recorded. These Benjaminite warriors who joined David despite belonging to Saul's own tribe represent a significant transfer of loyalty, recognized by the chronicler as evidence of God's support for David's kingship.
