Hashabniah
Person
Hashabniah is the name of two individuals in the post-exilic period. The first is the father of Hattush, who repaired a section of the Jerusalem wall under Nehemiah's direction (Nehemiah 3:10). The second is one of the Levites whom Ezra appointed to lead the congregation in a liturgical prayer of confession and covenant renewal — a long prayer recounting Israel's history from the creation through the exile (Nehemiah 9:5). This Levitical role in the public reading of history and covenant renewal reflects the central function of the Levites in the restoration community's spiritual life.
