Hashub

Hashub (meaning intelligent or esteemed) is the name of several individuals in the post-exilic period. Among them: (1) a Levite of the family of Merari, listed among those who settled in Jerusalem after the exile (Nehemiah 11:15; 1 Chronicles 9:14); (2) a son of Pahath-moab who repaired a section of the Jerusalem wall and the Tower of the Furnaces under Nehemiah (Nehemiah 3:11); (3) another wall builder who repaired the section opposite his own house (Nehemiah 3:23); and (4) a signatory of the covenant renewal under Nehemiah (Nehemiah 10:23). The name's recurrence in the wall-building project and covenant renewal reflects a community of Levitical and lay leaders actively rebuilding both the physical and spiritual infrastructure of post-exilic Jerusalem.
