Hazar-maveth

Hazar-maveth (meaning court of death) was the third son of Joktan in the table of nations (Genesis 10:26; 1 Chronicles 1:20), and the name was also applied to the region in southern Arabia that his descendants inhabited. The land of Hazar-maveth is identified with the ancient region of Hadramaut in modern Yemen — a term that preserves the biblical name in its Arabic form. The Hadramaut was one of the prosperous incense-producing regions of southern Arabia, important in the ancient spice trade that connected the Arabian peninsula with the Mediterranean world. The name's meaning — "court of death" — may reflect the arid and harsh nature of the desert terrain surrounding the fertile incense valleys.
