Hazar-shual

Hazar-shual (meaning village of the jackal or enclosure of the jackal) was a city on the southern border of Judah (Joshua 15:28) and was also assigned to the tribe of Simeon (Joshua 19:3; 1 Chronicles 4:28), as Simeon's territory was an enclave within Judah. After the exile, it was among the places resettled by the returning Jews from Judah (Nehemiah 11:27). Jackals (shu'alim) were common in the semi-arid Negev and their presence around an ancient settlement would naturally give it a name. The site has been tentatively identified with Tell es-Saba near Beersheba.
