Helek

Name

Name meaning: "part; portion"

Helek (meaning part; portion) was the second son of Gilead and grandson of Manasseh (Num. 26:30; Josh. 17:2). He was the founder of the Helekite clan within the half-tribe of Manasseh that settled in Canaan. The name is preserved in the Samaria ostraca — ancient inscribed pottery from the 9th–8th centuries B.C. that mention estate names corresponding to Manassehite clans including Helek, confirming the biblical genealogical tradition.
