Name meaning: "a digger"
Hepher (meaning a digger) appears as both a personal name and a place name. (1.) The third son of Gilead and founder of the Hepherite clan within the half-tribe of Manasseh (Num. 26:32; 27:1; Josh. 17:2–3). His son Zelophehad had only daughters, whose case led to the legislation on female inheritance in Numbers 27. (2.) A town in the Shephelah of Canaan whose king Joshua defeated (Josh. 12:17), later in Solomon's twelfth administrative district (1 Kings 4:10). (3.) A son of Ashhur, father of Tekoa (1 Chr. 4:6). (4.) One of David's mighty men (1 Chr. 11:36).
