Herb

Concept

Herbs in the Bible include both food plants and aromatic or medicinal plants. At creation, God gave "every herb bearing seed" as food for humans and animals (Gen. 1:29–30). Bitter herbs (mĕrōrîm) were prescribed as part of the Passover meal (Ex. 12:8; Num. 9:11), traditionally interpreted as representing the bitterness of Egyptian slavery; rabbinic tradition identified them as lettuce, chicory, or horseradish. Garden herbs — mint, anise (dill), and cumin — are mentioned by Jesus when he rebukes the Pharisees' meticulous tithing of kitchen herbs while neglecting justice and mercy (Matt. 23:23; Luke 11:42). The "herb of the field" broadly represents the ordinary produce on which human life depends (Gen. 3:18).
