Hermas

Hermas was a Christian at Rome to whom Paul sends greetings in Romans 16:14: "Salute Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermas, Patrobas, Hermes, and the brethren which are with them." The name is a shortened form of several Greek names compounded with Hermes (the Greek deity). Some ancient writers proposed that this Hermas was the author of the early Christian writing known as The Shepherd of Hermas, a popular 2nd-century apocalyptic text, but this identification is uncertain and most scholars consider the author of The Shepherd to be a later figure. Nothing else is known of this Hermas from Scripture.
