Hermes

Hermes was a Roman Christian greeted by Paul in Romans 16:14, listed alongside Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermas, and Patrobas. The name is that of the Greek messenger deity (Roman Mercury), commonly borne by slaves and freedmen in the Greco-Roman world, suggesting he may have been of that social background. He is distinct from the deity Hermes/Mercury, whom the Lystrans called Barnabas and Paul when they performed a miracle (Acts 14:12), calling Paul "Hermes" because he was the chief speaker.
