Hermogenes

Hermogenes (meaning begotten of Mercury or born of Hermes) was one of the Asian Christians who deserted Paul during his final imprisonment, mentioned alongside Phygelus: "This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes" (2 Tim. 1:15). The desertion was probably connected with the dangers of associating with Paul at his Roman trial, when many feared the consequences of standing with him. Paul contrasts their defection with the loyalty of Onesiphorus, who searched for Paul in Rome and was not ashamed of his chains (2 Tim. 1:16–18).
