Hermonites, the

The Hermonites is a poetic plural form referring to Mount Hermon's multiple peaks or aspects, used in Psalm 42:6 in the lament of a Levite in exile who remembers God "from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar." The plural suggests the writer looked upon Hermon's massif from the northeastern Jordan valley, perhaps from the territory of Dan or the Golan, and used the memory of this holy landscape as a touchstone for longing after God's presence at the Jerusalem sanctuary.
