Herod Archelaus

Herod Archelaus was a son of Herod the Great by Malthace (brother of Antipas) who was appointed ethnarch of Judea, Samaria, and Idumea after his father's death in 4 B.C., though denied the title of king. His brutal and incompetent rule was so oppressive that both Jews and Samaritans petitioned Rome against him; Augustus banished him to Gaul in 6 A.D. He is mentioned only once in the Gospels: when Joseph, returning from Egypt with the child Jesus, heard that Archelaus was ruling Judea in his father Herod's place, he was afraid to go there and was divinely warned to settle in Galilee instead (Matt. 2:22).
