Herod Philip I

Herod Philip I was a son of Herod the Great and Mariamne II (daughter of the high priest Simon). He lived as a private citizen in Rome, having been disinherited by his father. His wife Herodias left him for his half-brother Antipas. Mark 6:17 identifies him as the husband from whom Herodias was taken. He is to be distinguished from Philip the Tetrarch (Philip II), a different half-brother who ruled the northeastern territories. Philip I appears in no other Gospel narrative and plays no political role in the history of the period.
