Herod Philip II

Herod Philip II was a son of Herod the Great and Cleopatra of Jerusalem, appointed tetrarch of Batanea, Iturea, Trachonitis, and Auranitis — the northeastern territories (Luke 3:1). He rebuilt and enlarged the city at Caesarea Philippi (ancient Paneas), renaming it after himself and after Caesar (Matt. 16:13; Mark 8:27). He was regarded by Josephus as the most just of Herod's sons. He married Salome, the daughter of Herodias (the one who danced for Antipas). He died in 34 A.D. without an heir and his territories were absorbed into the province of Syria until Agrippa I received them.
