Herodias

Herodias was a granddaughter of Herod the Great and daughter of Aristobulus and Bernice. She married first her half-uncle Herod Philip I and had a daughter, Salome, by him. She then left Philip to marry his half-brother Herod Antipas, the tetrarch of Galilee and Perea. John the Baptist rebuked this marriage as unlawful (Lev. 18:16; 20:21; Matt. 14:3–4; Mark 6:17–18), and Herodias harbored a grudge against John and wanted to kill him, but Antipas feared the people and kept John in prison instead. When Antipas swore to give Salome whatever she asked after her dance at his birthday banquet, Herodias instructed her daughter to request the head of John the Baptist on a plate (Matt. 14:6–11; Mark 6:21–28), and Antipas complied. Herodias eventually went with Antipas into exile in Gaul.
