Hilary of Poitiers

Hilary of Poitiers (c. 310–367), bishop of Poitiers, was so staunch a defender of Nicaea in the West that he is called “the Athanasius of the West.” Exiled for opposing Arianism, he wrote On the Trinity and an influential Commentary on Matthew. A Doctor of the Church.

Exiled to the East for refusing to condemn Athanasius, Hilary brought Greek Trinitarian theology home to the Latin church. His On the Trinity defends the full deity of the Son against Arianism by patient appeal to the Scriptures, especially the Gospel of John, and his Commentary on Matthew is the earliest Latin commentary on that Gospel to survive intact.
