Hilkiah

Hilkiah (meaning God is my portion or my portion is Jehovah) is most significantly the high priest in the reign of Josiah who discovered the Book of the Law (almost certainly Deuteronomy) while the temple was being repaired (2 Kings 22:8; 2 Chr. 34:14–15). When the book was read to Josiah he tore his clothes in grief, recognizing how far Judah had strayed from the covenant, and sent Hilkiah with others to consult the prophetess Huldah. This discovery triggered the great Josianic reformation — the centralization of worship, the destruction of idols, and the massive Passover observance described in 2 Kings 23. Hilkiah was also the father of Jeremiah the prophet (Jer. 1:1) and father of Eliakim the palace administrator (2 Kings 18:18). Several other men named Hilkiah appear in Chronicles, Nehemiah, and Ezra, reflecting the name's popularity in priestly circles.
