Hosah

Hosah was a border town in the territory of Asher (Joshua 19:29), located near the coast of the Mediterranean north of Tyre and south of Zidon. Its placement in the Asherite boundary list suggests it was a coastal or near-coastal settlement in Phoenician-adjacent territory. The town gave its name to a family or district, and its precise modern identification remains uncertain, with proposed sites including Tell Rashidiyeh near Tyre.

The name Hosah also belonged to a Levite, a son of Merari, who was appointed as a gatekeeper of the ark of the covenant during David's arrangements for worship in Jerusalem (1 Chronicles 16:38; 26:10–11). This Levite Hosah was appointed with Obed-edom to minister before the ark after its installation in the tent David had pitched for it, and he was later assigned to the western gatehouse of the temple in David's organization of the Levitical duties. The shared name between the Asherite town and the Levitical gatekeeper represents coincidental usage of the same Hebrew term meaning trusting or refuge.
