Ichabod

Ichabod (meaning where is the glory? or no glory) was the son of Phinehas and grandson of Eli the priest. He was born on the day that the ark of God was captured by the Philistines at the Battle of Aphek (1 Samuel 4:1–22). His mother, dying in childbirth upon hearing the catastrophic news — that her father-in-law Eli had fallen dead, that her husband Phinehas had been killed, and that the ark had been taken — named the child Ichabod as a theological statement of mourning: "The glory has departed from Israel" (1 Samuel 4:19–22).

The name encapsulates the crisis at the end of the Eli era. The loss of the ark represented not merely a military defeat but the apparent abandonment of Israel's sanctuary by the divine presence. Ichabod thus becomes a living emblem of national and spiritual collapse. He is mentioned again by name only once more, in 1 Samuel 14:3, where his brother Ahijah serves as priest — a brief genealogical note placing the dynasty of Eli in the background of Saul's kingship.
