Immer

Immer was the head of the sixteenth of the twenty-four courses of priests established by David for service at the sanctuary (1 Chronicles 24:14). The priestly course of Immer became one of the more prominent divisions, as Jeremiah's antagonist Pashhur held the office of chief governor of the temple and was identified as "son of Immer the priest" (Jeremiah 20:1), suggesting continued leadership within that family. The name means talkative or a lamb.

After the Babylonian exile, members of the family of Immer were among those who returned to Judah: Ezra 2:37 and Nehemiah 7:40 record 1,052 members of the "children of Immer" among the returning exiles. Additionally, Ezra 2:59 lists a place called Immer in Babylonia from which some returned, though they could not prove their Israelite descent. The name thus represents both a priestly family line and possibly a place of Babylonian settlement associated with the exiled community.
