Intercession of the Spirit

The intercession of the Spirit refers to the Holy Spirit's work of praying on behalf of believers in a manner that transcends human speech and comprehension. Romans 8:26–27 is the primary text: "the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God." This intercession supplements the believer's weakness in prayer — the Spirit takes up what the believer cannot articulate and presents it to God in complete alignment with the divine will.

The Spirit's intercession is distinguished from Christ's in its location and mode: Christ intercedes as the ascended high priest in the heavenly sanctuary before the Father (Hebrews 7:25; Romans 8:34), while the Spirit intercedes within the believer on earth. Together they constitute a double intercession that grounds the confidence of Romans 8:28: "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good." Jesus's promise in John 14:26 that the Father would send the Spirit as another parakletos (helper, advocate) connects the Spirit's intercessory role to the same legal-mediatorial category that describes Christ's advocacy in 1 John 2:1.
