Iram

Iram (meaning citizen or city-dweller) was a chief (alluf) of Edom in the territory of Mount Seir, listed in the catalog of Edomite chiefs at the end of Genesis 36 (verse 43) and in the parallel list in 1 Chronicles 1:54. The Edomite chiefs listed in Genesis 36:40–43 are distinct from the earlier list of kings (36:31–39) and appear to represent a later system of tribal leadership — clan chiefs named after their districts or regions rather than a royal succession.

Iram is the last name in the Edomite chief list, closing the genealogical records of Esau's descendants. Beyond this closing position in the table, nothing further is recorded about Iram in Scripture. The Edomite genealogies in Genesis 36 serve as a closing bracket on the Esau narrative before Genesis 37 turns entirely to Joseph and the line of Jacob.
