Iscah

Iscah (meaning she who looks out or one who anoints) was the daughter of Haran and sister of Milcah, mentioned in Genesis 11:29 in the genealogical table of Terah's family at Ur of the Chaldees. Haran was the brother of Abraham, who died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity. Milcah, Iscah's sister, married Nahor, Abraham's other brother, and became the grandmother of Rebekah through their son Bethuel (Genesis 22:20–23).

Iscah herself receives no further narrative in Scripture. An ancient Jewish tradition, followed by Josephus and some early Christian interpreters, identified Iscah with Sarah, Abraham's wife — on the grounds that Sarah was Terah's daughter by another wife, making Abraham and Sarah half-siblings (Genesis 20:12), and that Iscah ("she who looks out") could describe the beautiful and watchful Sarah. This identification remains uncertain and is not accepted by most modern interpreters, but it reflects the early interest in harmonizing the genealogical data of Genesis 11.
