Ishmaiah

Ishmaiah (meaning heard by Jehovah or obeying the Lord) is the name of two men in the period of David's reign. (1.) A Gibeonite warrior who joined David at Ziklag during his time as a fugitive from Saul, listed in 1 Chronicles 12:4 as one of the mighty men of the thirty and described as a warrior capable of wielding both shield and spear against Saul's forces. Gibeonite warriors joining David's cause is notable given the complex history between Saul and the Gibeonites recorded in 2 Samuel 21. (2.) Ishmaiah son of Obadiah, appointed as the officer over the tribe of Zebulun in David's administrative organization of military districts (1 Chronicles 27:19).

Both figures represent the administrative and military network David built from men who were loyal to him before his kingship was formally established — a network that formed the backbone of his rule over all Israel.
