Jaare-oregim

Name

Jaare-oregim was the father of Elhanan the Bethlehemite, who slew a Philistine giant during David's wars (2 Sam. 21:19). The parallel account in 1 Chronicles 20:5 names the father as Jair, and identifies the victim as Lahmi the brother of Goliath — a difference that has generated much textual discussion. Most scholars regard the Samuel text as containing a scribal error and the Chronicles text as preserving the original reading. The name oregim means "weavers" and may be a scribal intrusion from the end of the verse where Goliath's spear staff is compared to a weaver's beam.
