Jabesh

Place Name

Name meaning: "dryness; confusion; shame"

Jabesh (meaning dryness; confusion; shame) is used both as an abbreviation for Jabesh-gilead (see that entry) and as the name of the father of Shallum, who killed Zechariah king of Israel and seized the throne (2 Kings 15:10–14). The town of Jabesh-gilead was located east of the Jordan in the highlands of Gilead. It had a special connection with Saul: when the Ammonite king Nahash threatened the city, Saul rescued it (1 Sam. 11:1–11), and it was the men of Jabesh-gilead who honorably retrieved Saul's body from the Philistine wall of Beth-shan after his death (1 Sam. 31:11–13).
