Jabneel

Place Name

Name meaning: "building of God"

Jabneel (meaning building of God) appears as the name of two places. (1.) A town on the northern boundary of Judah near the Mediterranean coast (Josh. 15:11), identified with the later Jabneh or Jamnia, an important city southwest of Joppa. After the fall of Jerusalem in 70 A.D., Jabneh became the seat of the reconstituted Sanhedrin and the center of rabbinic Judaism where the canon of the Hebrew Bible was discussed. (2.) A town on the southern boundary of Naphtali (Josh. 19:33). Uzziah king of Judah broke down the wall of Jabneel (2 Chr. 26:6).
