Jabneh

Jabneh was a Philistine city on the coastal plain whose wall was broken down by Uzziah king of Judah as part of his military expansion into Philistine territory (2 Chr. 26:6). It is identified with the Jabneel of Joshua 15:11 and the later Jamnia of the Hellenistic and Roman periods. After 70 A.D., Jamnia (Jabneh) became the most important center of Jewish learning in Palestine, replacing Jerusalem as the seat of rabbinic authority.
